The challenge

Projects get into trouble for five key reasons:

Poor selection of projects. Not enough attention is given to making sure the project is in line with the organisation's strategy, and that there is sufficient capability and capacity to implement the project effectively.
Lack of ownership. The project sponsor needs to be actively involved in decision-making, promoting the project from a position of authority, and remove barriers to maintain momentum. Within the project there needs to be clear ownership and responsibility for deliverables for the project team and the client.
Unclear aims and scope of the project. If the stakeholders don't know or can't agree why the project needs to happen now and what it must achieve, then it can't succeed.
Poor relationships. Projects succeed to the extent the relationships between suppliers, customers, the board and other stakeholders are effective.
Inability to manage change. It is not practical to deliver projects in a bubble - change happens and projects have to adapt and evolve or risk delivering something that is no longer relevant.

Where practical we would encourage the existing project team to execute the rescue plan, and we can support and supplement the team where necessary. Sometimes the project requires more significant restructuring, and we can help put an effective structure in place in order to keep the project alive.

Coraledge has a good track record of rescuing projects, particularly where relationships have broken-down. Once we understand the current situation, we work hard to build trust between the parties. Often this requires taking quick little steps before there is enough confidence to stride forwards, but it is worth the effort.
